The Miniature Art Society of South Africa (MASSA) was formed by Charmian Kennealy and Jeff Sochen. Charmian had spent five years of participation in exhibitions of miniature art when living in the USA and Canada. Joined by a group of like-minded artists the Society was formed in February 1992.
With miniature art societies world wide reviving the age old art form, it seemed only right that we, in this part of the world, should have a like-minded band of artists promoting and pursuing it. For many artists the more disciplined and detailed approach of miniature art was a welcome change from the predominately large and freer paintings in fashion today.
The Society has gone from strength to strength, having som one hundred members throughout South Africa. It has held successful exhibitions in all the main centres of South Africa. The Society which is a member of the World Federation of Miniaturists participated successfully in the first World Exhibition in London in 1995, the second World Exhibition in Hobart, Tasmania in 2000 the third exhibition in Washington DC in 2004 and the fourth World Exhibition in Burnie, Tamania in 2004.
With the success of members’ entries in previous World Exhibitions many have gone on to win awards in leading American exhibitions demonstrating the calibre of miniature art from South Africa.
The Society’s headquarters are at “The Art Place” 144 Milner Avenue, Roosevelt Park, Johanesburg where members’ work may be veiwed.
