The Hilliard Society was formed in 1981 and the Inaugural Exhibition was held in May 1982.  As the new society was based in South West England, it was named after Nicholas Hilliard, one of the first great English miniaturists, born in Exeter in 1547.

The Society welcomes both Friend Members and Exhibiting Members.  Artists may use the letters HS after their names when they achieve a consistently high standard.

The Annual Exhibition of members’ work is held in Wells, Somerset during June, a lovely time of year to visit the West Country.  The show opens with a champagne private view on Friday, followed by a members’ dinner

Half-yearly Newsletters give ample opportunity for exchange of ideas and information on subjects such as artists’ materials, exhibiting abroad, techniques and collecting miniatures.

The Society is constantly teaching, advising and informing the general public about the fascinating art of miniature painting.
